Animal Teachers: Teaching us valuable lessons about life

Lessons I have learned from dogs include their unconditional love to their patience, and forgiveness, dogs have a lot to offer in terms of wisdom and life lessons.

A few days ago, I met with a new client and we talked about our first and previous dogs. I mentioned my first dog, Abby, who I consider my “Soul Dog“. The lessons I have have learned from dogs is wide but Abby was my first teacher where I paid attention. She was the first dog I got on my own and not a family dog, which made her special to me. A “Soul Dog” is a dog that has a strong connection to their owner that is hard to explain. Although I love my other dogs, Jackson and Mojodeeply, I don’t think I’ll ever find another dog that I’ll have that soul connection with.

Abby was my co-pilot for 10 years until she passed away in January 2018. Her death hit me hard, and it took me a while to talk about it without crying. Abby taught me lessons such as confidence and how to open my heart. She was the type of dog that licked away tears and sat with people in need, whether it was myself or my family. She was by my side through many adventures, such as opening a new business, closing a business, losing a job, looking for a job, moving to 2 new states, a couple of hurricanes, a flood, and many blizzards. Whenever I thought I was alone, she helped me see the humor and light and that we could get through it.

Lessons I have Learned from Dogs x 2

So here we are with my dog training business, and now I have Jackson and Mojo by my side. They have taught me different lessons, as have the many dogs I’ve trained along the way. Each dog has taught me different lessons.

Mojo taught me how to work with dogs with anxiety and to be patient with reactive dogs. She showed me how to work through food reactivity, sounds, barking, and dog reactivity on walks. Jackson, who is my surfer boy, showed me humor, patience, calmness, and how to handle medical issues. Both dogs presented behavior issues and medical issues that were all very different.

All three of my dogs have taught me to open my heart, be patient with myself and others, be compassionate, and understand that we’re all on our individualized journey and could all use a little empathy and understanding. They have shown me not to be so serious and humor really is required in life. That no matter what you are doing it can be fun. This realization has opened my eyes to how connected we really are to our pets, no matter what kind they are.

Empathetic Connection

While I’ve talked about soul dogs and the lessons from dogs, I know that there are soul animals, and the connection to animals is unbelievable, if we’re open to it. As I sit here typing this, I am flanked by Jackson and Mojo, who are both waiting patiently for me to finish typing and take them out for a walk.

The connection to animals is real. When I ground myself and practice animal reiki for two of my dog clients, who I see three times a week, they immediately sit on the couch and lie down next to me, and we both feel connected to each other. I remember when I would do overnight pet sitting, and there would be two dogs at my feet and a Siamese cat at my head. I realize now that because we had a heart connection, I had opened up.

Animals can teach us valuable lessons if we are open to learning from them. We just need to open our hearts and eyes to see what they are showing us. If we let go of our preconceived notions of what learning should be, then the possibilities for growth are endless. Check out how I am trying to share the inspiration of my dog lessons. What lessons have you learned from animals lately?

Wags,

Allison
